WHAT SKILLS DO FARMERS NEED?
CRESCENDO is a great opportunity to understand the practical, concrete skills needed by today’s farmers – because they correspond to specific challenges which farmers face on a day-to-day basis. When it comes to communicating, for example, the participants from the Italian pilot course outlined a very specific sample of abilities they feel are needed in their work:
“How to overcome discomfort in facing a Videocamera?”
“How to present oneself in public?”
“How to be ‘efficient’ in presenting myself? I.e., not with too many words, not too long”
“How to establish authentic relationships?”
“How to develop our non-verbal communication, with our body?”
“How to really listen to the other?”
All of the Italian Crescendo participants are involved in entrepreneurial activities, one way or another: the owner of a bio-dynamic wine farm and cellar, a couple of gardeners, an agronomist, a couple of tour guides, a young father wishing to start-up a didactic farm, an actress with a project for an “artistic farm”, two women involved in managing international projects on sustainability, an expert eno-gastronomer working on Umbrian wine tours. Their demands from a training course such as Crescendo are very practical, and very specific – they don’t ask for theories, they ask for ways to do things, for ways to develop the ability to solve problems, to be effective in their work.
And from this viewpoint, CRESCENDO is quintessentially practical. It is “training” in the true sense of the word: a work on and through participants’ bodies, mind, and emotions; an “experiential framework” where experience is the door to change in habits and behaviors; a “value-based” initiative where games, exercises, discussions, and geared towards discovering first, and then being able to verbalize, and tell to others, one’s own beliefs. While playful and never boring, engaging in Crescendo places a demand on participants: to be truly involved, to be willing to play along, to be respectful of others and oneself, to be open to the possibility of “acting” differently – and ultimately, of being.
