Smascherati: Fostering Intercultural Dialogue Through Theatre
As one of the two Italian associations forming part of Crescendo, Smascherati is dedicated to making theatre a vibrant space for intercultural exchange. Founded in 1989 in Perugia by artists with diverse theatrical backgrounds, Smascherati! aims to bridge different cultures and human experiences through the power of artistic expression. Collaborating with distinguished theatre figures such as Eugenio Barba, Jacques Lecoq, and artists from the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Smascherati! has established itself as a cornerstone of cultural dialogue.
Over the years, the association has engaged in numerous collaborations at local, national, and international levels, always emphasizing social inclusion and the celebration of cultural diversity. Its most significant projects include “Human Beings,” an international workshop on intercultural theatre launched in 1994, and “Teatro Rifugio,” established in 2011, which provides a creative and safe space for refugees and asylum seekers to share their stories and explore their identities through theatre.
Every year, Smascherati! organizes workshops that culminate in original theatrical performances. These productions reflect the diverse backgrounds and rich cultural experiences of their participants, showcasing the unique stories and perspectives they bring. Beyond theatre, the association is committed to fostering non-formal learning, civic engagement, and empathy-building activities, aimed at enhancing communication skills, emotional intelligence, and cultural understanding.
As part of Crescendo, Smascherati! contributes to a broader mission of promoting social change through culture and arts. The association continues to leverage its platform to bring people together, strengthen communities, and promote a more inclusive society.
